Will I Lose Weight on Paleo? Thanks for visiting! I’ve only had one weight- loss client come see me who actually said, “My main motivation for losing weight is that I want to look hot.” Finally, someone just came out and said it! We all want to look hot, whether we admit it or not, and we all look our best when we’re at our optimal weight. The Paleo way of living has become popular partly because it helps people get there, whether that means gaining muscle, losing fat or both. ![]() Of course, in the process it also helps clear up our skin; reduce fatigue, depression and inflammation; and lower our risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. For some, though, the change in body composition alone is life changing. Right now we’re going to focus on the reasons the Paleo diet helps you lose weight. For the exceedingly thin people who are wondering whether or not it will help bulk you up, the short answer is “yes” and there will be more to come on that topic. Here are the top 3 ways that eating Paleo, and moreover, using the Paleo Plan meal program, will help you lose fat and get toned: 1. No More Fluff. But Neely, fluff isn’t a staple in my diet, you may be saying. Yes, actually, it probably is. More Diet Meal Plans and Diet Recipes. 7-Day Weight-Loss Diet Meal Plan; EatingWell 7-Day Meal Plan Help; EatingWell's 500-Calorie Dinners; Weight-Loss Diet Meal Plan. You just don’t think of it as fluff. Your bread, bagels, cookies, candy, crackers, tortilla chips, sandwich wraps, rice, pasta and added sugar are all fluff. Those things are high in calories and low in nutrients, especially if they’re made from refined flours, which means that they’re a waste of your culinary time. Those foods are also mostly carbohydrates, which means that if they’re not used up right away with physical activity they’re stored in your body as, you know it, fat. In addition, refined carbohydrates (and grains, in general) have a very negative effect on your blood sugar balance. When you have spikes in your blood sugar (the cracked out feeling you get after eating a box of candy and then the crash you feel afterward), you’re contributing to weight gain because of the insulin and cortisol spikes you create in your body. More on that in another post, though. Because the Paleo diet eliminates grains and refined sugars from your diet, you’re not going to be eating anything that isn’t densely packed with nutrients. The high quality protein you’ll be eating will stimulate muscle growth and balance out your blood sugar. The healthy fats will become your main fuel source instead of carbs, and the veggies and fruits are an invaluable source of nutrients, fiber and healthy carbs. None of these foods is fluffy. Water Retention. There’s a funny thing that happens when we eat carbohydrates: our cells hold onto the water that comes along with the carbs. It’s an evolutionary detail that helps people do sustained physical work without needing as much water. As you use up your glucose stores (your glycogen), water is released into your body. That was great for the active hunter gatherer type, but now that we are pretty sedentary as a culture, eating way more carbohydrates in the form of grains, legumes and extra sugar, we’re carrying around a lot of extra weight in the form of water. Have you ever watched the show “Biggest Loser”? The contestants usually lose extraordinary amounts of weight in the first week: 1. Most of it is water that they’ve been hoarding in their cells. When they first go Paleo, a lot of people, including myself, experience increased thirst and more trips to the bathroom to let out some of that excess water. Along with extra weight disappearing during this process, the edema you might have in your legs or feet, your puffy eyes or your swollen hands might start to dissipate, too. Food Sensitivities. Some experts estimate that as much as 8. U. S. That is a LOT of people. Alright, now what is gluten and what do I mean by sensitive? Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, spelt, oats, kamut, rye and barley. That means that unless it says “Gluten Free” on the label, it’s in bread, pasta, cookies, crackers, almost all pastries, tortillas, many soups, cereals, granola, beer, and on and on. Having a sensitivity to something simply means that your immune system is reacting to that food in some way. It’s not necessarily an “allergy” like your doctor would diagnose you with, but your immune system is involved, nevertheless. Lose Weight 126 Meal Plan. People can be sensitive to anything, and be plagued by a host of symptoms from it. For instance, I get a headache when I eat arugula. Yep, arugula. Often when people stop eating the foods they’re sensitive to, they lose weight. It happens partly because your body will hold onto water weight (blasted water again!) when it’s trying to protect itself from something; the water acts as sort of a buffer. So when you take out the offensive food from your diet, the water goes with it. Food sensitivities can also mess with your hormones and your thyroid function, and we know that both of those systems have much to do with body weight. Because the Paleo diet removes many of the foods that people are commonly sensitive to: gluten, dairy, corn, soy, and refined sugar, there’s a good chance you’ll have a positive reaction to not eating one or more of these foods on a regular basis. So there you have it. Most people (not all, but most) lose weight on Paleo if they need to lose weight. It really does a great job of getting you to your optimal weight, whether that’s by losing or gaining. If you’re eating what you were designed to eat, your body will finally have the opportunity to, well, look hot. What about Exercise?? Diet is the main driving factor in weight loss. That’s a fact, but of course, the right kind of exercise also can speed up weight loss and get you those muscles you’ve always wanted. I’m not talking about hours on the treadmill, either. That doesn’t work so well. What I AM talking about is bodyweight exercises (push- ups, pull- ups, lunges, jumprope, etc.) done in intervals. That’s what really works to take weight off and get you fit! If you’re interested in having our trainer send you at- home workouts every week, check out our fitness program, Paleo. Fit. Government proclamations, concerning royal ceremonies, laws, taxes, public health, criminals, have been dubbed news since ancient times. Humans exhibit a nearly universal desire to learn and share news, which they satisfy by talking to each other and sharing information. Technological and social developments, often driven by government communication and espionage networks, have increased the speed with which news can spread, as well as influenced its content. The genre of news as we know it today is closely associated with the newspaper, which originated in China as a court bulletin and spread, with paper and printing press, to Europe. Meaning. To make the news, an ongoing process must have some . Michael Schudson has argued that, before the era of World War I and the concommitant rise of propaganda, journalists were not aware of the concept of bias in reporting, let alone actively correcting for it. People seem to be interested in news to the extent which it has a big impact, describes conflicts, happens nearby, involves well- known people, and deviates from the norms of everyday happenings. Among Zulus, Mongolians, Polynesians, and American Southerners, anthropologists have documented the practice of questioning travelers for news as a matter of priority. Starting in England, coffeehouses served as important sites for the spread of news, even after telecommunications became widely available. Travelers on pilgrimages to Mecca traditionally stay at caravanserais, roadside inns, along the way, and these places have naturally served as hubs for gaining news of the world. Julius Caesar regularly publicized his heroic deeds in Gaul, and upon becoming Emperor of Rome began publishing government announcements called Acta Diurna. These were carved in metal or stone and posted in public places. The Zulu Kingdom used runners to quickly disseminate news. In West Africa, news can be spread by griots. In most cases, the official spreaders of news have been closely aligned with holders of political power. In thirteenth- century Florence, criers known as banditori arrived in the market regularly, to announce political news, to convoke public meetings, and to call the populace to arms. In 1. 30. 7 and 1. These laws stipulated how many times a banditoro was to repeat a proclamation (forty) and where in the city they were to read them. These criers were sent to read official announcements in marketplaces, highways, and other well- traveled places, sometimes issuing commands and penalties for disobedience. Thus, political, religious, and commercial interests have historically controlled, expanded, and monitored communications channels by which news could spread. Postal services have long been closely entwined with the maintenance of political power in a large area. These can have ranged from smoke and fire signals to advanced systems using semaphore codes and telescopes. China, where reports gathered by officials were eventually compiled as the Spring and Autumn Annals. The annals, whose compilation is attributed to Confucius, were available to a sizeable reading public and dealt with common news themes—though they straddle the line between news and history. Between 7. 13 and 7. Kaiyuan Za Bao (. The system depended on hikyaku, runners, and regularly spaced relay stations. By this method, news could travel between Kyoto and Kamakura in 5–7 days. Special horse- mounted messengers could move information at the speed of 1. This system was initially used only by the government, taking private communications only at exorbitant prices. Private services emerged and in 1. They became even faster, and created an effective optical telegraphy system using flags by day and lanterns and mirrors by night. At 3. 3 kilometers per day, a runner would take two months to bring a message across the Hanseatic League from Bruges to Riga. The driving force of this new development was the commercial advantage provided by up- to- date news. Sponsorship flavored the contents of each series, which were circulated under many different names. Subscribers included clerics, diplomatic staff, and noble families. By the last quarter of the seventeenth century avvisi long passages from were finding their way into published monthlies such as the Mercure de France and, in northern Italy, Pallade veneta. For the Holy Roman Empire, Emperor Maximillian I in 1. Italian Tasso family, Francesco and Janettto, to create a network of courier stations linked by riders. They began with a communications line between Innsbruck and Mechelen and grew from there. These riders could travel 1. Centered in Germany, the network took in news from Russia, the Balkans, Italy, Britain, France, and the Netherlands. Indeed, personal correspondence sometimes acted only as a convenient channel through which news could flow across a larger network. By 1. 53. 0, England had created a licensing system for the press and banned . Thus by offering free postage to newspapers wishing to exchange copies, the Postal Service Act subsidized a rapidly growing news network through which different stories could percolate. Economically oriented newspapers published new types of data enabled the advent of statistics, especially economic statistics which could inform sophisticated investment decisions. Yet, as in the case other newspapers, the incorporation of advertising into the newspaper led to justified reservations about accepting newspaper information at face value. The first English- language newspaper in the area was The Royal Gazette and Sierra Leone Advertiser, established in 1. The Royal Gold Coast Gazette and Commercial Intelligencer in 1. Liberia Herald in 1. Some liberalization and diversification took place in the 1. By the end of the eighteenth century, the Ottoman Empire's leaders in Istanbul did monitor the European press, but its contents were not disseminated for mass consumption. The modern form of these originated with Charles- Louis Havas, who founded Bureau Havas (later Agence France Press) in Paris. Havas began in 1. French government's optical telegraph network. In 1. 84. 0 he began using pigeons for communications to Paris, London, and Brussels. Havas began to use the electric telegraph when it became available. With the value of international news at a premium, governments, businesses, and news agencies moved aggressively to reduce transmission times. In 1. 86. 5, Reuters had the scoop on the Lincoln assassination, reporting the news in England twelve days after the event took place. The rebels proceeded to disrupt the British telegraph network, which was rebuilt with more redundancies. In 1. 93. 7, the Party renamed the agency Xinhua, New China. Xinhua became the official news agency of the People's Republic of China in 1. The wire services maintained close relationships with their respective national governments, which provided both press releases and payments. In order to send goods to another area, merchants needed to know first whether in fact to send off the goods and to what place. Information costs and speed were essential for these decisions. The Paley family founded CBS soon after. These two networks, which supplied news broadcasts to subsidiaries and affiliates, dominated the airwaves throughout the period of radio's hegemony as a news source. This operation was financed mostly with advertising and public relations money. The Nazi Party made use of the radio in its rise to power in Germany, with much of its propaganda focused on attacking the Soviet Bolsheviks. The British and Italian foreign radio services competed for influence in North Africa. All four of these broadcast services grew increasingly vitriolic as the European nations prepared for war. The BBC reported on Allied invasion of Normandy on 8: 0. Listeners followed along with developments throughout the day. Murrow, who first entered the public ear as a war reporter in London, made the big leap to television to become an iconic newsman on CBS (and later the director of the United States Information Agency). In 1. 99. 1, the BBC introduced a competitor, BBC World Service Television. Rupert Murdoch's Australian News Corporation entered the picture with Fox News Channel in the USA, Sky News in Britain, and STAR TV in Asia. Al Jazeera hired many news workers conveniently laid off by BBC Arabic Television, which closed in April 1. It used Arabsat to broadcast. Department of Defense and used mostly by academics. This weekend is the 3. Spaceballs, Mel Brooks (somewhat) beloved Star Wars spoof. Brooks might’ve set out to imitate and satirize George Lucas’ iconic work, but that doesn’t mean everyone else did their research. In an interview with. The Hollywood Reporter, co- star Bill Pullman admitted that he didn’t watch Star Wars before co- starring in Spaceballs, meaning he didn’t really know who his character, Lone Starr, was actually parodying. And it wasn’t like it was a new movie, either— all three films in the original trilogy came out years before Spaceballs. A New Hope was a decade old by that point.“I missed it the first time around,” Pullman said. I didn’t need to see Star Wars to know what the whole thing was.”Star Wars may have started out as a surprise smash in 1. Han Solo, Lone Starr’s inspiration. Nowadays, it’s kind of funny to imagine Pullman trying to parody something he knew practically nothing about. Then again, it’s Spaceballs. Maybe it actually helped. A Case Against Cardio (from a Former Mileage King)We all know that we need to exercise to be healthy. Unfortunately, the popular wisdom of the past 4. Hate to say it, but we weren’t meant to aerobicize at the chronic and sustained high intensities that so many people choose to do these days. The results are almost always unimpressive. Ever wonder why years of “Spin” classes, endless treadmill sessions and interminable hours on the “elliptical” have done nothing much to shed those extra pounds and really tone the butt? Don’t worry. There’s a reason why the current methods fail, and when you understand why, you’ll see that there’s an easier, more effective – and fun – way to burn fat, build or preserve lean muscle and maintain optimal health. The information is all there in the primal DNA blueprint, but in order to get the most from your exercise experience, first you need to understand the way we evolved and then build your exercise program around that blueprint. Like most people, I used to think that rigorous aerobic activity was one of the main keys to staying healthy – and that the more mileage you could accumulate (at the highest intensity), the better. During my 2. 0+ years as a competitive endurance athlete, I logged tens of thousands of training miles running and on the bike with the assumption that, in addition to becoming fit enough to race successfully at a national class level, I was also doing my cardiovascular system and the rest of my body a big healthy favor. Being the type A that I am, I read Ken Cooper’s seminal 1. 2 Day Fast Diet Consecutive Sentence MeaningAerobics and celebrated the idea that you got to award yourself “points” for time spent at a high heart rate. The more points, the healthier your cardiovascular system would become. Based on that notion, I should have been one of the healthiest people on the planet. Unfortunately, I wasn’t – and that same mindset has kept millions of other health- conscious, nirvana- seeking exercisers stuck in a similar rut for almost 4. It’s time to get your head out of the sand and take advantage of your true DNA destiny, folks! The first signal I had that something was wrong was when I developed debilitating osteoarthritis in my ankles. This was soon coupled with chronic hip tendonitis and nagging recurrent upper respiratory tract infections. In retrospect, it is clear now that my carbohydrate- fueled high- intensity aerobic lifestyle was promoting a dangerous level of continuous systemic inflammation, was severely suppressing other parts of my immune system and the increased oxidative damage was generally tearing apart my precious muscle and joint tissue. The stress of high intensity training was also leaving me soaking in my own internal cortisol (stress hormone) bath. It wasn’t so clear to me at the time exactly what was happening – in fact it was quite confusing, since I was doing so much of this so- called “healthy” aerobic exercise – but I had no choice but to give up racing, unable to train at anywhere near the intensity required to stay at an elite level. To make ends meet. Of course, we lifted weights as part of the overall plan (and I will go into greater detail on that important aspect of fitness in a later post), but for the aerobic component of their training, I started doing long walks or hikes or easy bike rides with them. My many clients got the benefit of me actually working out right along side them and I got the benefit of 3 to 5 hours a day of very low intensity aerobic work (well, very low for me anyway). It was refreshing and really didn’t take much effort on my part, but I knew I had to be deriving at least some small benefit from those hours. Since I didn’t have much time left in the week for my own workouts, once or twice a week I would do a very short but very intense workout for my own benefit, usually sprints at the track or “hill repeats” of 2- 3 minutes each on the bike. Lo and behold, within a year, my injuries were healing, I was rarely sick and I was even back to occasionally racing – faster than ever. Something “primal” was happening and it made total sense in the context of the DNA blueprint. ![]() I was training like my hunter- gatherer ancestors, building my aerobic capacity slowly and steadily without overstressing my adrenals or my immune system, training my body to derive more energy from fats (and not glucose), requiring far fewer carbohydrate calories from my diet, and building muscle with occasional quick bursts of speed and intensity. I was suddenly both fit AND healthy. My Primal Health system was kicking in and it all made perfect sense. Humans, like all mammals, evolved two primary energy systems that powered the skeletal muscles of our hunter- gatherer ancestors 4. The first energy system relied heavily on the slow burning of fats to create ATP (the universal energy currency), keeping us fueled while we were at rest or sleeping, yet also allowing for continuous or intermittent low levels of aerobic activity (think of our ancestors walking across the savannah for hours foraging for roots, shoots, berries, grubs, insects and the occasional small animal). It makes sense. Fats are very efficient fuels that are stored easily in the fat cells and burn easily and cleanly when lots of oxygen is present (as when we are breathing normally). Even if there’s no food in the immediate area, a well- trained fat- burning hunter- gatherer could continue walking and foraging for days without compromising his or her health or efficiency. ![]() It's time to answer three important questions. What's the best way to lose weight, what's the fastest way to do it, and how do you keep it off after losing it? One of the more recent toxic additions to our food supply is the artificial sweetener called Neotame i. In the European Union, where it was approved. The second major energy system we developed through evolution was the ATP- PC system, which allowed for intense loads of work to be done in very brief bursts (think of our hunter- gatherer ancestors sprinting to the safety of a tree to avoid being eaten by a lion). Both ATP and phosphocreatine (PC) are always sitting right there within the muscle cells, with the former providing a quick burst of energy and the latter replenishing the former as it depletes. Together, they are the highest octane fuel we have, but it doesn’t last long. In fact, it’s ATP- PC and adrenaline that allow the little old lady to lift the front end of the Ford Fairlane off her husband when the jack fails. Unfortunately, the muscles can only store about 1. If our ancestors survived that quick sprint to safety, however, their ATP and PC reserves were filled again within a minute or two, making available another 1. Furthermore, that brief burst of intense energy sparked a small “growth spurt” in the muscle, making it even stronger for the next encounter with the next lion – a true survival adaptation.(Note: While our energy systems are actually quite complex, varied and interrelated, I have simplified things here to make it easier to “digest”.)Bottom line: Fats and ATP- PC were the two primary energy sources for locomotion: we either moved slowly and steadily or “fight or flight” fast, and we became stronger and healthier the more we used only those energy systems. But here’s the real take- home message for us: We did not evolve to rely heavily on a carbodydrate- fueled energy system, and yet, carbohydrate metabolism seems to rule our lives today. ![]() Yes, carbohydrate (in the form of glucose) can play a major role in the production of energy in skeletal muscle, but it turns out that the heart and skeletal muscle prefer fatty acids (fat) as fuel over glucose. Our hunter- gatherer ancestors didn’t regularly ramp their heart rates up for over an hour a day like so many of us do now. Even when the concept of organized hunting came along, it would appear that our hunter- gatherer ancestors relied more on superior tracking ability (using our highly evolved and exceptionally large brains) and walking (using our superior fat- burning systems), rather than on actually “chasing down” their prey. In fact, squandering valuable energy reserves (and increasing carbohydrate . You’ve spent an incredible amount of energy, yet now you have no food to replace that energy. You have suddenly become some other animals prey because you are physically exhausted). So, what does all that mean for us in the 2. Well, we know that this current popular high intensity aerobic pursuit is a dead- end. ![]() It requires huge amounts carbohydrate (sugar) to sustain, it promotes hyperinsulinemia (overproduction of insulin), increases oxidative damage (the production of free radicals) by a factor of 1. Far from that healthy pursuit we all assumed it was! What, then, is the answer? Knowing what we know about our hunter- gatherer ancestors and the DNA blueprint, we would ideally devise an aerobics plan that would have us walking or hiking several hours a day to maximize our true fat- burning systems and then doing intermittent “life or death” sprints every few days to generate those growth spurts that create stronger, leaner muscle. However, since allocating a few hours a day to this pursuit is impractical for most people, we can still create a plan that has a fair amount of low level aerobic movement, such as walking briskly, hiking, cycling at a moderate pace, etc a few times a week and keep it at under an hour. Then, we can add a few intense “interval” sessions, where we literally sprint (or cycle or do anything intensely) for 2. ![]() If you are willing to try this new approach, but haven’t sprinted for a while, you may want to ease into it. Start with maybe three or four the first time, resting two minutes in between and, after a few weeks of doing this, work your way up to a workout that includes six or eight all- out sprints after a brief warm- up. An easy few minutes of stretching afterwards and you’ve done more in less time than you could ever accomplish in a typical “8. Max Heart Rate” cardio” workout. That’s exactly type of the plan I do myself and that I give all of my trainees now. Eventually, you'll lose inches as well, but the rate at which you lose them and where may depend on your genes, whether you exercise and what exercises you do. Inches - - and even pounds - - are not the only measure of improvement. Cardiorespiratory endurance and percentage of body fat are better measures of true physical fitness. When you lose fat, you lose it all over your body, but when tracking improvements, you may be measuring just your waist and hips. The waist is one area where fat tends to accumulate for men and some post- menopausal women, while pre- menopausal women often accumulate fat in the hips and thighs. If you're following a safe weight- loss program of no more than 1 to 2 pounds per week, the little bit of fat loss apportioned to those areas won't be as noticeable in the beginning as other areas with less fat accumulation. The first thing you may notice is that your rings start slipping because your fingers carry considerably less fat than other parts of your body. Your hips and thighs will be the last to show noticeable improvements. ![]() ![]() While it may sound counterintuitive, dieting without exercise can actually cause you to lose inches faster, but it's not the best way. This is because cutting calories without engaging in fat burning cardio and resistance work can lead to as much as 2. While muscle is more dense than fat, meaning that a pound of muscle takes up less room in your body than an pound of fat, it still takes up some room. If your fat cells shrink, and the area is not filled with lean muscle, you're more likely to lose inches on the tape measure. However, your fat- to- lean tissue ratio could be worse than before your weight loss, you're more likely to suffer saggy skin and you'll have less stamina. Ab and core work are essential for good posture, back health and the ability to engage in other exercise, such as fat- burning cardio and resistance training for other parts of your body. But doing crunches and crunch twists without employing proper technique will strengthen your rectus abdominis but not your deeper traverse abdominis. ![]() This deeper muscle is what pulls your ab area in. To target the transverse abdominis, exhale and pull your navel toward your spine during the lift portion of your exercise. In addition, some women find that lateral bends and dips to strengthen their obliques actually add girth. In that case, exercises that involve rotation of the upper torso can be more effective. Calories aren't the only intake issue to monitor. The dietary changes you make to lose pounds on the scale could add inches to your girth through bloating that affects your waistline. Joy Bauer, RD, writing in . Even healthy foods such as broccoli, lentils and whole grains can add to the problem, while carbs can cause you to retain water. Bauer suggests cutting down the amount of carbs by adding some protein to pasta dishes and cooking the offending vegetables rather than eating them raw. You can replace sugar- free drinks with ginger, peppermint or fennel teas that tend to cut back on bloating.
